Sell your Western painting

Here is how Steven Stern Fine Arts handles Western American paintings, from your first email or call to a completed purchase or consignment.

What we buy

  • Taos Society of Artists and other Taos and Santa Fe painters, including Taos Pueblo artists;
  • cowboy, cavalry and frontier subjects;
  • Native American subjects, from portraits to camp and pueblo scenes;
  • landscapes of the Southwest and the West: deserts, canyons and mesas, the Rockies, Montana and the Tetons.

See the Western artists whose work the gallery has sold.

What to send us

  • the whole front, photographed square-on in even light;
  • the entire back, including any inscription, title, place name, date, stamp or label;
  • the signature and any date on the front;
  • the dimensions of the image area, not the frame;
  • what you know about the painting's history: family ownership, purchase records, exhibition or dealer labels, earlier appraisals.

Leave Western paintings and bronzes untouched: no cleaning, no new frames, and no removing tags or labels before we've looked.

How we evaluate a painting

Evaluations are confidential. The gallery looks at authorship, period, subject, condition, provenance, exhibition history, literature and importance within the artist's work.

Your options

  • Outright purchase by the gallery.
  • Consignment, with the gallery offering the painting to its clients on your behalf.
  • Advice and private sale for important single works, estates and multi-artist collections.

Seeing the painting

The gallery's Los Angeles base serves owners of Western art in every state, and Steven Stern regularly travels to see collections.
